ABSTRACT
Shirazi Z. Tahamtan Y, Hayati M, Sahragard, I., Effect of colicinogenic E.coli (CEC) on diarrheic E. coli (DEC) K99 isolated
from calves, Onl J Vet Res., 17 (5): 236-244, 2013. Effect of colicinogenic E.coli
(CEC) on diarrheic E. coli (DEC) K99 isolated from calves is described. Three
hundred rectal swabs were isolated from diarrheic calves with ~50% E. coli.
PCR was performed to detect gene encoding colicins. Effect
of CEC strains on DEC K99 was done by agar gel diffusion with inhibition clear
zone around spots. More frequent Colicin genes were Ia Ib, V, ANS4 but M was not
detected. Approximately 35% of CEC strains exhibited inhibition of DEC K99
(P<0.05). The growth of DEC K99 was restricted by CEC strains producing colicin in vitro.
Results suggest that colicins can inhibit growth of E.
coli K99 in vitro.
