ABSTRACT
Euclid
JM, Wilcox RA., Citrobacter vaginitis and salpingitis
in a Burmese kitten, Onl J Vet Res, 15 (4): 420, 2011. Chronic vaginitis in a young breeding
Queen which resulted in salpingitis is described. The
cat presented with mucopurulent vaginitis but was clinically normal without
dysuria and normal growth since birth. The kitten tested negative for FIV and FeLVnand, was diagnosed with vaginitis, and discharged with
amoxicillin/clavulanate 50mg orally, twice daily. The
animal was re-examined at 12 weeks of age without change in clinical
signs. Laparotomy revealed an enlarged, inflammed right ovary and large cysts on the left ovary with
normal uterine horns. Ovariohysterectomy was performed and a vaginal swab for
bacteriology was taken. The cat was discharged with further amoxicillin/clavulanate as above and re-examined 10 days later at time
of suture removal and the vaginitis appeared resolved. A culture of Citrobacter diversus was
isolated as a pure growth from the vaginal swab, sensitive to amoxicillin,
amoxicillin/clavulanate, cephalexin, enrofloxacin, gentamicin and tetracycline.
Key words: Vaginitis, Salpingitis, Kitten, Citrobacter.
