Abstract

Wanzala W,  Onyango-Abuje JA, Kang'ethe K.E, Zessin KH, Kyule NM,  Ochanda H, Harrison SJL.   Incidence of Taenia saginata by carcass inspection and dissection, Onl J Vet Res., 28 (9): 537-545, 2024. By meat inspection, 31 of 55 carcasses had no cysts whereas by dissection only 2 of 31 had no cysts. By artificial infestation 12 carcasses passed but by inspection, only 1. By natural infestation, 13 carcasses passed inspection, and 1 by dissection. Of 55 carcasses sliced for cysts, only 7 passed whereas by inspection 26 were condemned and 22 frozen –100C   for consumption. In calves infested artificially, by dissection we found cysts in 23 of 24 carcasses (95.83%), whereas by inspection only 12 (50%). In those infested naturally all had cysts except one. Of 24 calves infested artificially 15 carcasses had live or dead cysts. Whereas by natural infestation by dissection, we found cysts in 24 of 25 carcasses. By inspection we found 12 carcasses with cysts. Similar numbers of live or dead cysts were found in liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, rumen, diaphragm and tongue (50.72%) fore limbs, pelvis, hind limbs, head, chest, lumbar, neck and back) (49.28%). Our findings suggest dissection was twice as efficient for detection of bovine cysticercosis compared with meat inspection.

Key words: Taenia saginata cysts, natural, artificial, infestation, meat inspection, dissection.
