Clinical, pathological and prognostic data from 37 female dogs diagnosed
with inflammatory mammary carcinoma, Onl J Vet Res., 19(1): 1-14, 2015. Inflammatory mammary carcinoma (IC) is an extremely aggressive uncommon neoplasm with poor prognosis among mammary tumors. At diagnosis, a
large majority of patients with IC have metastasis. We describe clinical, pathology,
chemotherapy and prognosis data from 37, 6 to 15 year old pure and
mixed breed female dogs over a 5 year period from 908 hospitalized females (4%). All cases were acute with a very low survival rate.
Histological subtypes were mostly high-grade anaplastic. Poodles and mixed-breeds had the highest frequency
(10/37) with most being sexually intact (33/37). All dogs had diffuse involvement of multiple glands with mammary
nodules, firmness, warmth, thickening and pain, the 4th
and 5th glands being the most commonly affected (94.6%). Tumors measured 10-20 cm in length in 22 cases. Both mammary chains were involved in 11 dogs (29.7%), Erythema in 25, ulceration of the affected skin in 27, and edema of the limb in 25 were detected during
clinical examination. In all cases, regional lymph nodes felt firm with increased size
suggesting metastasis. Coagulation tests in 10 animals revealed 4 with
hemostatic abnormalities by prothrombin
time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin tests. Chemotherapy increased survival time
providing local pain relief. Anatomical and pathological changes
seen during necropsy resulted in different causes of death.
KEY-WORDS: canine mammary cancer; inflammation;
hemostatic abnormalities; chemotherapy.
