Isolation of typical and
atypical E. coli O157 strains from
camel feces

SUMMARY
Sami M, Adeli M., Isolation of typical and atypical E. coli O157 strains from camel feces, Onl J Vet Res., 17 (3): 130-136, 2013. Prevalence of E. coli O157 and identification of 4 genes belonging to shiga-toxin producing E. coli stx1, stx2, eae and hly in 150 healthy camel feces is described. Three of 150 samples were positive for E. coli O157 of which strains 1, 2 and 3 were positive for stx1, stx2, eae and hly genes, respectively. Only one was determined to be typical (E. coli O157:H7) while 2 isolates were atypical O157. The prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 in camel feces was lower than that those reported in cattle. The data obtained from this investigation revealed low presence of verotoxigenic E. coli O157:H7 (0.66%) infection in camels, which might be attributed to factors related to the STEC, environment and or to the camels themselves. Camel fecal samples may have been infected by non-verotoxigenic E. coli O157 serotype. Results suggest that camels do not play a significant role in infection and transmission of Shiga-toxin producing E. Coli.
