ABSTRACT
Pourjafar M, Badiei K, Chalmeh AA, Naghib M, Pourmirzaei H, Abdolhoseinzadeh M., Prevalence of cardiac arrhythmias in normal Camelus dromedaries, Onl J Vet Res., 15 (4): 297-303, 2011. Prevalence of cardiac arrhythmias in different ages of clinically healthy dromedary camels was determined. The animals were divided into groups of <1, 1-5, 5-10 and 10 to-15 years. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) were collected from 97 camels without any clinical signs of cardiac disease. ECGs indicated that 73 camels had 1-2 types of arrhythmias. Sinus arrhythmia, sinus tachycardia and sinus bradycardia. The proportion of different cardiac arrhythmias between <1 and 5-10 years old camels, were significantly different (P=0.001). Sinus arrhythmia was the most frequent arrhythmia recorded. Since none of the camels with cardiac arrhythmias showed any clinical signs of heart disease at the time of ECG recordings, the arrhythmias observed in this study could be considered as physiological.
Key words: cardiac arrhythmia, electrocardiogram,
dromedary camel, physiological arrhythmia
