Getnet AM, Abebe W, Mekonnen
H., Reference Hemograms of ISSA dromedaries in Ethiopia,
Onl J Vet Res., 9 (1) : 48-56, 2005. Hemograms were conducted on 130 normal Issa
camels from Dawa, Eastern Ethiopia. Mean red blood
cell (RBC) count was 7.49
mil/µl,
hemoglobin (Hb) 13.04
g%, packed
cell volume (PCV) 25%, mean corpuscular volume 35.26 fl, hemoglobin
concentration 51.21% and
hemoglobin 18.1 pg. Mean total white blood cell count was 14.2 x 10 3/µl, neutrophils 7 x 103/µl, lymphocytes 6 x 103/µl, eosinophils 0.72 x 103/µl, monocytes 0.54 x 103/µl and basophils
0.06 x 103/µl. Male camels had
higher (P< 0.05) PCV, Hb and RBC count than
females, but females higher total WBC count (P<0.05). Peak RBC and WBC occurred
in camels aged 6-10 years. Compared with cattle, these values are higher owing
to the unique adapted physiological features of camel. PCV, Hb
concentration and RBC count were correlated. With r=0.4 for erythrocyte count
and PCV, 0.46 for erythrocyte count and Hb and 0.67
for PCV and Hb. These reference data may be useful
for physiological and behavioral research in camels.
