Effect of saline versus dextrose-saline on blood electrolytes
and ECG in neonatal calves with diarrhea

227-235, 2013. The effect of dextrose-saline
versus normal saline solution on electrolyte imbalances and ECG in diarrheic
calves is reported. Two groups each of 10 calves with diarrhea and
dehydration greater than 10% were given IV saline solution 0.9% or IV
dextrose–saline solution of sodium chloride 0.9% and dextrose 5%, respectively.
Base-apex ECGs and jugular blood samples were taken before and after treatment.
There was no difference in any ECG or serum values before or after treatment in
calves given saline solution. In calves given saline with dextrose there were
differences in potassium, calcium, magnesium and glucose before and after
treatment but none in serum sodium or heart rate. Of the 20 calves, 7 exhibited
cardiac arrhythmias which disappeared after saline or saline dextrose fluid
therapy. Results suggest that in neonatal calves with
diarrhea, dextrose-saline solution may correct electrolyte imbalances more
efficiently than saline alone.
