ABSTRACT
Asgari Safdar AH, Dayani N, Kor NM., Effect of
calcium salt fatty acid supplement on conception, estrogen, progesterone, insulin
and cholesterol in ewes, Onl J Vet Res., 26 (3): 213-218,
2022. Four groups of twelve 2 to 3 year, ~46kg Ashari ewes kept in separate
pens were fed barley grain (1), 5% DM calcium salts from flaxseed (2) or
sunflower oil (3) with controls (4) fed only basal diet. Ewes were synchronized
with progesterone device in vagina 14 days and pregnant mare serum gonadotropin
injection. Serum estrogen, progesterone (P4) and insulin were determined at 0h,
24h before and after device implant, as well as 14 days after mating. Compared
with controls we found that barley and calcium salts in flaxseed and sunflower
oils boosted conception by ~29 to 47%, birth weight ~6 to 16% and lambing (x2=
10.50, p <0.05). All ewes given calcium salts became pregnant at 1st
service whereas those given barley and controls only 83-92%. Estradiol was enhanced ~17% 24h after removal
of implants. Our results suggest that
calcium salts in flaxseed may boost fertility and lambing in Afshari ewes.
Key words: Calcium salts, flushing,
lambing, reproduction, ewes.
