ABSTRACT

Nazifi S, Saboorifar MH, Erjaee H, Omidi A, Khosravi M, Haddadi M, Niknam H., Serum calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 and parathyroid hormone values in male and female camels, Onl J Vet Res., 20(11):686-690, 2016. Serum concentrations and correlations between calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH) D3) and PTH in 45 female and 45 male camels (one humped) are reported.  Serum Ca, P and Mg were measured by colorimetry, PTH by ELISA kit and serum 25(OH) D3 concentrations by HPLC.  Significant differences were found between males and females in Ca and PTH but not with P, Mg or 25(OH)D3. Values in males were Ca 6.37 ± 1.15, P 6.49 ± 1.82, Mg 2.23 ± 0.36 mg/dl, 25(OH)D3 839.31 ± 30.10 pg/ml, PTH 361.01 ± 109.18 ng/ml and in females Ca 7.72±1.98, P 7.31±1.77, Mg 2.18±0.19 mg/dl, 25(OH)D3 834.86±28.86 pg/ml and PTH 305.39±107.92 ng/ml. No correlation was found between P and 25(OH)D3 in any group but Ca values correlated negatively with Mg (r= -0.35; P < 0.01) = 0.91).

Key words: Ca, P, Magnesium, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, Parathyroid hormone, One humped camels.
