ABSTRACT

Lima CB, Varges R, Bacila VJ, Lilenbaum W Seroepidemiological survey of brucellosis in sheep from the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Onl J Vet Res 11(2):45-49, 2007. Sheep breeding is an increasing activity in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Sheep may be infected by either Brucella abortus or Brucella ovis. Infected animals are usually asymptomatic and no specific signs for brucellosis are detected. The present study is a serological survey for both Brucellae agents in Rio de Janeiro sheep.   A total of 357 serum samples of sheep from 5 regions of the state were tested by both Rose Bengal Plate Agglutination test (RBT) and Agarose Gel Immunodiffusion test (AGID), for detecting antibodies directed to B. abortus and B. ovis, respectively. No sample was reactive to RBT and thirteen (3.64%) presented anti-Brucella ovis antibodies. Our findings suggest that the most prevalent brucellosis in the state of Rio de Janeiro is caused by B. ovis and not by B. abortus. This is a first report of seroreactivity against B. ovis in sheep from Rio de Janeiro.

Key words:  Brucella abortus, Brucella ovis, sheep.
