The antioxidant ascorbate (AA) modulates brain hunger neurotransmitters. The
effect of celebral injections of AA and dopamine D2
receptor agonist bromocriptine (Br) into the intra-nucleus accumbens
shell (NAcbsh) on feeding intake in intact and
chronic oral AA-treated (100 mg kg-1 for 15 days, i.g.) male Wistar rats is
described. Each rodent received 10, 50 or 250 µg ascorbate or 25 and 50µg Br or
50AA+50Br µg or control sham injections. Feed intake was measured in an automatic metabolic cage. Results
suggested that Br, AA alone of given together decreased feed intake. AA
attenuated the decreasing feed intake effect of Br. Chronic oral pretreatment
with AA had no effect the feed decreasing effect of central AA or Br.
