ABSTRACT

Ahmed WM, Nabil G.,M Oxidant/anti-oxidant status and hemoglobin in pre-weaning calves with normal and reduced vitality, Onl J Vet Res., 25 (8):516-521, 2021. Oxidant/antioxidant status and hemoglobin characteristics were evaluated in 253, 2-3 month old vital and weaker pre-weaning buffalo calves. We found ~38.74% with rough coats, scouring, nasal discharges, cough and reduced size. We then collected blood from 15 normal calves and 15 with reduced vitality for hemoglobin derivatives, conductivity, selenium, gluthathione (GSH) and serum Manolhehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), antioxidants (TAC), ascorbic acid , nitric oxide (NO), copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe). Compared with control calves, in those with reduced vitality, we found increases (P < 0.05-0.001) in MDA (41%) and NO (33%) but lower CAT (-70%), SOD (-19%), absorbic acid -28%, GSH -39%, zinc 29%, copper  -22%, iron -12% , selenium -21% and TAC -49%. We found reduced hemoglobin conductivity but higher methemoglobin, carboxyhemoglobin (~43%) and sulfahemoglobin in weaker calves. We find that calves exhibiting signs of pre-weaning weakness suffer oxidative stress as indicated by blood markers.

Key words: oxidant /antioxidant - hemoglobin – buffalo calves –weaning – vitality.
