ABSTRACT

Trang CTH, Zamri-Saad M, Noordin MM, Jasni S, Phagocytosis of Pasteurella multocida B:2 by alveolar macrophages in calves. Onl J Vet Res., 12 (2):59-66, 2008. Clinical signs, pathology, changes in the respiratory tract and phagocytosis by alveolar macrophages and neutrophils of wild-type and gdhA derivative of Pasteurella multocida B:2 following intratracheal inoculation in calves were determined 48 h post-inoculation.  Wild-type P. multocida B:2 resulted in clinical signs typical of haemorrhagic septicaemia, including dullness, fever, mucous nasal discharge and salivation. Subcutaneous oedema was obvious at the lower jaw, neck and brisket areas. The lungs, trachea and epiglottis were congested and oedematous while associated lymph nodes were congested with petechial haemorrhages. These changes were not observed in calves inoculated with gdhA derivative of P. multocida B:2. There was significant (p<0.05) difference in phagocytosis by alveolar macrophages and neutrophils between calves inoculated with wild-type (45+4.1%) and those inoculated with gdhA derivative (57+3.4%) of P. multocida B:2.

Key words: Pasteurella multocida B:2, haemorhagic septicaemia, phagocytosis,
