Serological and gross findings in broilers with avian influenza and bursal disease,
Online J Vet Res, 14(1):87-94, 2010. Avian influenza virus (AIV:H9N2 subtype) is typed as of low pathogenicity, but
frequent cases of high mortality occur. Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is a
common respiratory pathogen in chicken farms. Authors report effect of IBV on
H9N2 AIV infection in broilers. Tracheal samples were taken from broilers with
respiratory disease and high mortality rate.
Reverse Transcriptase - PCR was done to verify AIV and IBV in samples.
Tracheal samples (0.2ml) positive for H9N2 AIV, IBV and AIV with IBV were
inoculated intranasally in 21 day chicks monitored
daily for clinical signs, feed intake, mortality and gross lesions. Birds were
bled on days 0 (pre-inoculation), 10 and 20 PI (post inoculation) and sera
tested for antibodies to H9 subtype of AIV using HI test, and antibodies to IBV
by ELISA. Results showed that
co-infection of AIV with IBV enhanced clinical signs, mortality and lesions. HI
titers against AIV infection in co-infected groups were significantly (P < 0.05)
greater than other groups.
