ABSTRACT
Fariba N, Paria P, Mehr
A, Zohreh B, Hamid D., Histomorphological effects of Metformin, Pioglitazone, Repaglinide and Acarbose on
polycystic ovaries in NMRI mice, Onl J Vet Res., 22 (10):919-927, 2018. Polycystic ovaries (PCO) were induced by
injection of testosterone enanthate (TE) in 5 groups
of 5 immature NMRI female mice each for 4 weeks then treated with Metformin,
Pioglitazone, Repaglinide and Acarbose
for 2-4 weeks. Five of these mice were testosterone PCO controls. Body and
ovary/body weights were measured and microscopy of ovaries was evaluated. In PCO
controls, we found numerous cystic follicles but reduced follicle growth. Compared
with PCO controls, in those given metformin, body weights declined 17% ovary/body
ratio weight 36% and ovarian diameter 38% (p<0.05). Pioglitazone induced
similar effects (P < 0.05). In mice given Metformin, Pioglitazone and Repaglinide we found less oocytes, pyknosis
and vascularization and fewer primordial, primary, antral, cystic and atretic follicles but more pre-antral follicles (p < 0.05).
With all treatments we found less polycystic ovaries, degenerated oocytes, pycnosis and vascularization. Results suggest that Metformin and
Pioglitazone best ameliorated polycystic ovary syndrome in NMRI mice.
